4 Tips for Creating a Custom Boathouse

October 30, 2017

When you own a piece of waterfront property, you have the opportunity to build a unique boathouse that you and your family can enjoy for years to come. Having a boathouse created at the edge of your property creates a great place to store your boat and to entertain your guests.

When you have a boathouse built, it is important to consider your options so you can customize it to suit your family’s needs. Taking the time to customize your boathouse means that you will enjoy it now and in future. The following guide walks you through a few ways to make any boathouse more elaborate and useful.

1. Build a Two-Story Boathouse

Many people do not realize that they can have a boathouse created that has two stories. The first story is used to store the boat, and the upper story is used as an observation deck, entertainment area and an overall great place to get an amazing view of the water.

When having a two-story boathouse built, it is important to realize that a membrane needs to be put under the boards on the second story. The membrane keeps water from seeping under the boards and onto the boat that is stored underneath. Additionally, the upper level will have a slight angle so that water drains off of the edge of the deck instead of seeping through it.

2. Invest in Unique Railings

If you want to have a two-story boathouse built, you will need to add railings. The railings are designed to ensure that no one accidentally falls off of the second story of the boathouse and gets hurt.

When choosing the railings, consider glass or wired railings. These are the best options because they do not restrict your view as much as traditional picket railings. When you are up on the second story, you will be able to get an amazing view of the water, so you should ensure that your view is not obstructed by railings.

3. Install a Solar-Powered Boatlift

Many people do not realize that boatlifts are electrically powered. That means that you must have the boatlift wired into an electrical source. If the power goes out at your house, your boatlift will not work.

It is best to invest in a solar-powered boatlift. This feature will ensure that your boatlift will work at all times. A solar-powered boat lift also saves you money in the long run because you will not have to pay electrical costs to power the boatlift when you use it.

4. Add a Screened Room

If you do not want to create a two-story boathouse, but want to have a space to entertain friends and family, consider having a screened room created on the side of the boathouse. The room will keep bugs out of the space and provide you with a comfortable place to relax when you need to take a break from the sun.

Be sure to have a ceiling fan installed in the room so that you can feel cool air on the hot days of summer. Additionally, be sure that the porch has a door that can be locked so that no one can gain access to the room without your knowledge.

When you decide to have a boathouse built on your waterfront property, consider all of your options and talk to your contractor to see if there are any new options that you do not know about.
