Prolong the Life of Your Boat Lift With These Tips

April 26, 2023

A boat lift offers convenience since you don't have to transport your boat to and from home whenever you want to head out. Additionally, a boat lift protects your boat from a prolonged stay in the water, lowers the chances of theft, and reduces the boat boarding hassle.

As such, boat lifts are significant investments, so you cannot afford to have your boat lift fail when you least expect it to. The system requires adequate care and maintenance to ensure long-term use. Discover some helpful tips to make your boat lift last for a long time.

Observe the Weight Limit

Boat lift manufacturers recommend a specific weight limit for each of their models. Exceeding the recommended weight limit will put immense pressure and strain on the cables and cause breakage.

Also, be careful with the boat's positioning before raising and lowering it. Ensure the weight is evenly distributed across the boat lift, and adjust the cables in case of misalignments.

Inspect the Lift for Rust

Regardless of the lift's material, the system may be susceptible to rust due to exposure to the elements. Some lift's hardware, especially the metallic components, are more prone to this damage. So inspect the lift regularly to catch signs of corrosion and rectify them before the issue escalates.

While you do this, check the bolts and nuts to ensure they are tightly fitted. Loose bolts and nuts can disturb the lift's balance, resulting in costly damages. You may not easily spot these issues, so let a professional inspect the boat lift regularly.

Lubricate the Parts

Certain parts, such as cables, pulleys, and bearings, constantly move and grind against each other. This movement can speed up wear and tear, but you can slow down the wear with adequate lubrication.

However, be careful with the type of oil you use on the boat lift. For example, grease is known to trap humidity, making grease unsuitable for steel cables. Conversely, you can use grease on pulleys and gears primarily when you notice odd sounds.

Maintain the Gear Box

The gearbox is the heart of your boat lift. This component features the transmission and drive systems.

The gearbox is also prone to sticking, primarily due to a lack of lubrication. So apply regular lubrication to the gears and transmission systems. That aside, watch out for faulty motors and coverings to ensure they are rust-free. The drainage system must also be well-sealed, and the bottom holes open for proper drainage.

Inspect the Bunks

The bunks hold the boat in place during your boating trips and must be in good condition for the lift to work optimally. Regularly inspect the bunks for damage while ensuring all brackets are correctly fastened.

Additionally, check the bunk boards for signs of splitting and replace them when necessary. And check the carpet for signs of damage and replace it when necessary.

Rinse the Boat Lift With Fresh Water

Salty water makes your boat lift susceptible to salt crystals and algae growth. These elements can eat away at the cables and cause premature wear.

The gearbox, cradles, and lift beam are also prone to water damage. So take time to rinse the boat lift with fresh water regularly.

Ultimately, proper maintenance and care are essential in prolonging the life of your boat lift. The tips above protect the boat lift from untimely wear, so you can enjoy maximum convenience. Most importantly, invest in annual boat lift maintenance by professionals to ensure all components function efficiently.
